Sooo it took me a heck of a lot longer than I thought it would to put this post together. I've just had so much going on lately, and it's had an impact on the amount of time I've been able to put into my blog. But I did manage to find a few moments here and there over the last couple of weeks, and I was finally able to get this post out!
This is going to be the third and final part of the "Dollar Store Win or Bust" series— for now, at least. I've had a lot of fun testing out these DIY kits, and I'm sure I'll find more that are just as exciting in the future.
For today's instalment, I decided to take a stroll down memory lane by demonstrating how to use a simple tie dye kit that I picked up from Dollarama a few weeks ago. Without further ado, let's get to it!
Materials
Tie dye kit
White T-shirt
Extra rubber gloves
Plastic wrap
The best part about this kit was that it came with all of the essentials: dye in easy-to-use squeeze bottles, strong elastic bands, and protective gloves. All I had to provide was an inexpensive cotton T-shirt, and water to activate the powdered dye.
The kit also came with a set of instructions and design ideas for you to experiment with. Personally, I think the spiral is the most iconic tie dye pattern, so I decided it would be the perfect design to try for this tutorial.
All I did was lay the T-shirt on my work surface, pinch the middle section with my fingers, and twist until it formed a loose circle. I then secured the pinwheeled shirt in place by creating a cross-cross pattern with three elastic bands.
Next, I saturated three of the triangular sections with some green dye, and then repeated the process with the remaining sections and the blue dye.
Before setting the shirt aside and allowing the dye to do its thing, I covered the piece with a few sheets of plastic wrap.
After approximately eight hours, I removed the wrap, snipped off the elastic bands, and rinsed the T-shirt in our laundry tub until the excess dye was gone and the cold water ran clear.
Finally, I tossed the shirt in the wash and followed the kit's instructions to figure out the proper settings for both the washing machine, as well as the dryer!
I was so happy when I pulled this shirt out of the laundry. It definitely brought me back to my childhood, and I thought the spiral design turned out perfectly.
